FROM THE NASHVILLE SCENE: 10/26/06
"Murfreesboro's Turncoats share personnel with raunchy punk hooligans The Young Livers and synth-pop new-wavers How I Became The Bomb, and upon hearing their new 7-inch single, the amalgamation makes perfect sense. Taking the bluesy punk of the former and polishing it with the pristine pop of the latter, The Turncoats come away with a classic, guitar-driven power pop sound reminiscent of Big Star and The Who. Recorded by Brian Carter, who sat behind the recording console for The Features and seemingly any band that was ever associated with Spongebath Records, the single marks the first release under the newly established record label faction of the Murfreesboro music hub Grand Palace."
- Matt Sullivan

FROM ALL THE RAGE NASHVILLE 10/19/06

"When I recently asked Self leader and Beck bandmate Matt Mahaffey which local bands he was particularly keen on, he gave me one name: Turncoats.

Mahaffey has always kept a close ear on the Murfreesboro underground scene from which Turncoats sprang, ever since his days as the center of the Spongebath Records universe, so it's not surprising that a Boro band (a supergroup of sorts featuring members of the Young Livers, the Bang Up and The Katies) with a penchant for razor-sharp pop should be bleeping his radar. I'm also going on record to predict that as soon as Little Steven hears the band's fantastic debut single on local label Grand Palace, Turncoats should instantly have another equally vocal fan. He should lose his mind over this one.

The Turncoats' single, perfectly produced by Murfreesboro's Brian Carter, kicks some Kink-y British invasion garage rock with a hint of post-Strokes style and slippery Stones bar band blues, without any annoying indie incompetence and hipster disaffectedness. "

Adam went to a record sale...

...and surprisingly found some great stuff! this weekend, in my free time
away from the blur of activity for grand palace records’ 1st birthday
party (a store where i work in murfreesboro, tn), i mangaged to go to
grimey’s records 2nd annual fall sale in nashville. (grimey’s is very
cool, by the way. stop in if you’re ever in nashville.) i did not
expect to find anything worthwhile, but i picked up all of these for
the nice price of $1 a piece.
NORO MORALES AND HIS QUINTET – NO BLUES , NORO: this is a nice piece of laid-back latin jazz. i like.
HUGO MONTENEGRO – MOOG POWER : worth the dollar for the cover alone, i
actually like some of these moog-laden arrangements of 60’s pop songs.
SOFT MACHINE 4 : even though i prefer the prankster-fuzz-psych sound of
soft machine 1 and soft machine 2, i am a fan of the band’s
instrumental prog-fusion era. if you are into that kind of thing, i
would recommend this album.
STEVE MILLER BAND – SAILOR : before you
think of “the joker” or...
