for everyone
...and surprisingly found some great stuff! this weekend, in my free time away from the blur of activity for grand palace records’ 1st birthday party (a store where i work in murfreesboro, tn), i mangaged to go to grimey’s records 2nd annual fall sale in nashville. (grimey’s is very cool, by the way. stop in if you’re ever in nashville.) i did not expect to find anything worthwhile, but i picked up all of these for the nice price of $1 a piece.
NORO MORALES AND HIS QUINTET – NO BLUES , NORO: this is a nice piece of laid-back latin jazz. i like.
HUGO MONTENEGRO – MOOG POWER : worth the dollar for the cover alone, i actually like some of these moog-laden arrangements of 60’s pop songs.
SOFT MACHINE 4 : even though i prefer the prankster-fuzz-psych sound of soft machine 1 and soft machine 2, i am a fan of the band’s instrumental prog-fusion era. if you are into that kind of thing, i would recommend this album.
STEVE MILLER BAND – SAILOR : before you think of “the joker” or that other 70’s shit, you should give this a listen. it’s a nice mix of blues, pop, and psychedelia. i was pleasantly surprised by this album.
THE SOUND OF WILSON PICKETT : goddamn, i love wilson pickett. he’s easily one of my favorite r&b or soul singers.
MARTIN DENNY – QUIET VILLAGE : poke fun if you wish, i think this record is great. i love the cover, too.
WALTER CARLOS – A CLOCKWORK ORANGE : the song “timesteps” is incredible. it reminds me of early tangerine dream.
i also picked up two REDD FOXX comedy records. fucking hilarious!!

for everyone
From Nashville's weekly entertainment magazine All The Rage:

"When I recently asked Self leader and Beck bandmate Matt Mahaffey which local bands he was particularly keen on, he gave me one name: Turncoats.

Mahaffey has always kept a close ear on the Murfreesboro underground scene from which Turncoats sprang, ever since his days as the center of the Spongebath Records universe, so it’s not surprising that a Boro band (a supergroup of sorts featuring members of the Young Livers, the Bang Up and The Katies) with a penchant for razor-sharp pop should be bleeping his radar. I’m also going on record to predict that as soon as Little Steven hears the band’s fantastic debut single on local label Grand Palace, Turncoats should instantly have another equally vocal fan. He should lose his mind over this one.

The Turncoats’ single, perfectly produced by Murfreesboro’s Brian Carter, kicks some Kink-y British invasion garage rock with a hint of post-Strokes style and slippery Stones bar band blues, without any annoying indie incompetence and hipster disaffectedness.

Turncoats have to — and I’m insisting here, have to — play the upcoming Little Steven’s Underground Garage event with the New York Dolls. I’ll lead a one-man picket outside of City Hall if not."
